Glasses are all around us – from window glass to the light-producing materials in smart phone displays.
The properties of glasses are largely determined by the way in which they are “born”. In physical vapor deposition (PVD), a glass is birthed directly from the vapor phase.
We have discovered that glasses prepared by PVD can have remarkable properties, including anisotropy and dramatically enhanced stability.
I will present an overview of PVD glasses, with an emphasis on multicomponent PVD glasses used for smart phone displays.
